I’ve been having some troubles with my assistant this past year. Joel is friendly and able. He’s been with me for nine years and he’s great company, but never once has he brewed a pot of coffee. He is also constantly shedding around the office and overly concerned with the snack budget provided. This would be concerning for any supervisor, but I’ve neglected to mention that Joel is my cat of almost a decade and the office I’m typing to you from is located in my living room. After almost two years, I think it’s time to consider the importance of investing in a home office and the benefits it can provide both you and any other recently acquired co-workers.

Money and marriage, the two seem to be forever intertwined. In my first post on this series, Celebrating the Long Haul I talked about my own recent marriage. It turns out, I wasn’t the only one reflecting on the value of anniversaries at the time. My dad let me know that he had begun making plans to renew his vows after 31 years of marriage to my mother. She later confided to me how much that meant to her, that with all the gifts and difficulties that come along with decades of commitment; her partner would choose to do it all again. It struck me that years down the road when thinking about my own wedding, I wouldn’t remember the price of peonies or the cost of carnations, but rather recall the celebration of promises kept.

Different types of people prefer different types of gifts. This is a tried and true fact in my own relationship. I tend to gravitate towards life’s finer things: a new purse, makeup, and being treated to as many of Los Angeles’ burritos as humanly possible. My husband? He’d like to be given something he can put to use, like gift cards or cash. Having been married recently, I found myself googling anniversary gifts. I was surprised to learn that traditional wedding anniversary gifts can not only include the type of flashy presents I prefer, but also many materials that have a history of being used as currency.
